Sacred Economics

Materials: Photo collage, on circular wooden base

The title of this piece is a reference to Charles Eisenstein’s book Sacred Economics, which critiques capitalism and discusses gift economies and spiritual values around money. I made it and other money-related objects during a period of about 6 months when I was extremely really broke and underemployed. With nothing but time and financial stress on my hands, I thought and read a lot about the idea of money, this construct that rules so much of our lives and well-being.

Eisenstein’s main premise is that money is but story. Conventions our society has agreed upon and normalized as “fact.” He writes about how the current story of money will necessarily fall apart and be transformed, returning to a kind of gift economy.
