I am a multidisciplinary artist working with sound and music, writing, performance and visual media, and earning my living producing and writing podcasts. I believe the role of the artist is to be a witness to the world and to use her artistry to reveal the truth of what she bears witness to. In my work, particularly as an interviewer and as a musician, I listen attentively. This action of listening to stories, to sound, to my inner voice and, in fact, to everything alive in the world, is a big part of my practice.
Most of my work comes out of a process of collecting eclectic materials (images, sounds, texts, research) and assembling these into collages or scripts. These compositions either explore themes or tell specific stories by playing with composition, dynamics, symbolism, repetition and rhythm. Patterns emerge and a structure is built, with intention, but also by embracing unconscious choices and the accidents of action. Discovery occurs when, in the process of simultaneously creating meaning and letting go of a need to, the story or truth of the piece is revealed. Whether writing a script, or creating a visual or sonic work, my process is best described as similar to musical improvisation. I listen to others, human, natural or material, in order to hear what to do next.
